WHO is the Holy Spirit & What’s His Role? -Part 1

Who is the Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit is God… Not a “thing” or “it”.

We don’t have to wait or ask for the Holy Spirit. He takes up residency at the moment of salvation.

“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper (advocate / counselor / comforter) to be with you forever,” John 14:16 (ESV)

Roles of the Holy Spirit

1. The Holy Spirit draws and awakens us to Jesus Christ. (John 6:44)

2. The Holy Spirit helps us pray. (Romans 8:26-27)

3. The Holy Spirit teaches us. (John 14:26, Psalms 119:18, Ephesians 1:17-18)

4. The Holy Spirit reminds us. (John 14:26)

5. The Holy Spirit acts as a counselor / guide. (John 16:13)

6. The Holy Spirit produces fruit in our life. (Galatians 5:22-23)

7. The Holy Spirit empowers us. (Acts 1:8)

WHO is the Holy Spirit & What’s His Role? -Part 2

How essential is The Holy Spirit?

Without the Holy Spirit, we operate in our own strength and only accomplish human-size results.  THE HOLY SPIRIT IS ABSOLUTELY VITAL TO OUR LIVING TODAY. THE HOLY SPIRIT IS OFTEN IGNORED.

The Holy Spirit helps us pray – 2 reasons why the Holy Spirit intercedes

“Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.” Romans 8:26

The Holy Spirit intercedes because we don’t know how to pray as we ought. Literally, this means we don’t know what to pray for -when crisis happens or when we pray for someone else. We don’t know the future so we can’t tell how things will turn out. Men, we don’t know…not beating you up…this is normal…it’s why we need the Holy Spirit …selfishly, ignorantly, narrowly.

“And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.” Romans 8:27

The Holy Spirit intercedes because we don’t know what is best for us. Our vision is so limited. We only see a tiny fraction of the universe and our perspective is inevitably tainted by selfishness. So when we pray, we say what is on our hearts. And the Spirit says to the Father, “What he really means is this…If he knew better, this is what he would ask for…he wants to be like Jesus and this is what he really needs.”

How do we know that God hears those inarticulate groanings that come from deep within? Verse 27 declares that God constantly searches our hearts. Because the Father knows what the Spirit is thinking, there is perfect intimacy/harmony. There is no contradiction between the Spirit and Father. No “circling back” or agree to disagree talk. The Spirit intercedes for us and he always intercedes according to God’s will.
